The Story

Showmax Unveils New Limited Series Agu, Premiering December 14

Showmax has announced the release of Agu, its latest Nigerian Original limited series, set to premiere exclusively on the platform on 14 December 2023.

Tell Me More

Agu is a six-part legal drama headlined by Nollywood icon and multiple Africa Movie Academy Award (AMAA) winner Kanayo O. Kanayo. The series centres on three pivotal characters — Etim (Kanayo O. Kanayo), Pius (Nonso Odogwu), and Victoria (Ruby Okezie) — whose lives collide during a gripping murder trial involving the death of Jonathan, a close friend of Pius.

Set against the rich backdrop of Igbo culture, Agu explores themes of family, justice, belief, and betrayal, while delving into the tension between modern legal systems and traditional belief structures.

Plot Overview

Etim is a 50-year-old, highly educated lawyer battling career setbacks and alcoholism. When he crosses paths with Pius — a devout traditional worshipper accused of murdering his friend in a forest — Etim sees the case as a last chance to resurrect his failing legal career.

Standing in his way is Victoria, an ambitious prosecuting counsel with whom Etim shares a complicated past. As the trial unfolds, secrets begin to surface, relationships are tested, and nothing turns out to be as straightforward as it first appears.

Cast & Characters

The series also stars:

  • Mofe Duncan as Sola, Victoria’s charismatic yet egotistical boss
  • Tina Mba as Judge Akorede, a firm and no-nonsense jurist
  • Ireti Doyle as Lola “LS” Lateef Simpson, a ruthless senior partner determined to win at all costs
  • Linda Ejiofor, Ego Nwosu, Vine Olugu, and former BB Titans housemate Miracle Op

What They’re Saying

Speaking on his role, Kanayo O. Kanayo expressed excitement about the project:

“I’m thrilled to be part of Agu, not just as an actor but as a lawyer helping bring authenticity to the legal story. I’ve been part of many great films, but Agu truly stands out. It’s a series audiences should look forward to.”

He added that viewers would see themselves reflected in the characters, particularly through the portrayal of family ties and the pursuit of justice.

Behind the Scenes

Agu is directed by Anis Halloway, an Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) winner known for Unmarried, Truth, and Hustle. According to Halloway, the series is a powerful and relatable story that speaks directly to Nigerian realities.

Release Details

Agu premieres 14 December 2023 on Showmax, with new episodes dropping every Thursday.
