A High-Stakes Story of Survival

Set in contemporary Nigeria, To Kill a Monkey introduces viewers to Efemini (played by William Benson), a man at his lowest—battling financial hardship and emotional turmoil. An unexpected encounter with a former friend, played by Bucci Franklin, sets him on a treacherous path into the world of cybercrime. The stakes? Everything.

Each decision Efemini makes blurs the lines between desperation and danger, painting a gritty portrait of survival in a system where the odds are stacked.

A Standalone Masterwork

Unlike Adetiba’s previous projects, notably the King of Boys universe, this series marks a new chapter in her storytelling journey. Developed under her production outfit, Kemi Adetiba Visuals, alongside collaborator Remi Adetiba, the series was announced in mid-2023 and filmed later that year in Lagos.

From the suspenseful opener In the Beginning (57 minutes) to the finale Who Wins at the End (1 hour 7 minutes), each episode delivers a tightly woven narrative marked by emotional intensity and moral complexity. Other notable episodes include Hand of Friendship (1 hour 4 minutes), where unlikely partnerships emerge, and Pour Petrol on Fire (55 minutes), a turning point where tensions flare.

Stellar Cast, Cinematic Execution

Veteran actors Stella Damasus and Bimbo Akintola join the ensemble, enriching the storyline with layered performances that highlight the emotional stakes of the underworld drama. The visual approach leans into a polished yet raw aesthetic, amplifying the series’ tone with bold cinematography and meticulous production design.

A Strategic Investment in Nollywood

To Kill a Monkey is more than just a TV show—it’s a signal of Netflix’s continued investment in African content and storytelling. With a fresh concept and Adetiba’s signature flair, the series positions itself as a major milestone for Nollywood on the global stage.
