This fall, we’re bringing together documentary filmmakers, video journalists, and industry professionals in our hubs in DC, London, LA, and NYC for a night of connection, conversation and bold storytelling centered on two of the most defining issues of our time.

Al Jazeera English x Video Consortium / Call for Short Film Submissions: Stories on climate & immigration from the Global South
The Video Consortium is excited to partner with Al Jazeera English for a four-city gathering and screening series spotlighting bold, urgent short documentaries that illuminate the lived experiences and untold narratives of the Global South.
We’re seeking short films (5 to 25 minutes in length) that explore the intersecting themes of climate or immigration through compelling storytelling, immersive filmmaking, and powerful local perspectives. If you’re a filmmaker originally from the Global South—or if your work centers communities, movements, or stories from underrepresented regions—we want to hear from you.
About the Series
In fall 2025, VC and Al Jazeera English will co-present four gatherings in: New York City, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and London.
Each will include a curated screening of Al Jazeera English documentaries alongside selected short films from our open call, followed by a filmmaker Q&A and discussion, and our usual community mingling with light bites and non-alcoholic drinks.
We’re Looking For:
- Short documentaries (under 25 minutes)
- Works that center the climate crisis, migration, displacement, or diasporic identity
- Films grounded in or representing voices from the Global South
- Projects made by VC member filmmakers originally from the Global South or with deep connections to stories from the Global South and are now based in the U.S. and part of diasporic communities
Timeline:
- Deadline to submit: Sunday, August 3, 11:59pm ET
- Events: Mid September – Fall 2025
- Format: In-person screenings, Q&As, and community gatherings
What Selected VC Members Receive:
- Inclusion in a high-profile screening alongside Al Jazeera English content
- An opportunity to present your work to an engaged, industry-connected audience
- Participation in post-screening Q&As or panels
- Networking and community-building with fellow filmmakers, journalists, and changemakers
- Screening fee/honorarium
