Toyin Abraham Makes Nollywood History as Oversabi Aunty Joins the ₦1 Billion Club

Toyin Abraham has reached a new career high in Nigerian cinema as her latest film, Oversabi Aunty, officially crosses the ₦1 billion mark at the box office. The milestone was confirmed just weeks after the film’s theatrical release, placing it among an elite list of Nollywood’s highest earners.

A Strong Start That Built Momentum

Oversabi Aunty premiered in cinemas nationwide on December 19, 2025, and recorded impressive numbers from its earliest days. The comedy-drama showed steady week-on-week growth, eventually pushing its cumulative earnings past ₦1 billion by its sixth weekend in cinemas.

According to box office reports, the film’s earnings progressed as follows:

  • Advanced screenings: ₦12.7 million

  • Week 1: ₦196.3 million (₦209 million cumulative)

  • Week 2: ₦326.5 million (₦535.5 million cumulative)

  • Week 3: ₦248.2 million (₦783.7 million cumulative)

  • Week 4: ₦114.2 million (₦897.8 million cumulative)

  • Week 5: ₦77.7 million (₦975.6 million cumulative)

  • Weekend 6 (Fri–Sun): ₦41.8 million

This brought the total to ₦1,017,331,452, officially confirming its entry into the billion-naira category.

Inside the Film

Directed by and starring Toyin Abraham, Oversabi Aunty tells the story of Toun, an overly righteous church usher whose constant need to “correct” others leads to conflict within her family and church community. Through humour and emotional storytelling, the film explores themes such as religious hypocrisy, family rivalry, marital expectations, tribal bias, and neglect.

The movie features a strong ensemble cast including Mike Ezuruonye, Odunlade Adekola, and other familiar Nollywood faces, adding depth and star power to the narrative.

Marketing Power and Audience Connection

Beyond the storyline, the film’s commercial success is closely tied to Toyin Abraham’s aggressive and handson marketing style. Known for personally driving promotions, she once again leaned heavily on digital platforms, particularly TikTok and Instagram. From skits and trailers to behind-the-scenes moments and direct appeals to fans, she consistently kept the film in public conversation.

This approach mirrors her earlier campaigns. Malaika was promoted through street-level activations and mobile advertising, while the Alakada franchise benefited from viral social media buzz, high-profile premieres, and strong fan engagement.

A Career Milestone

Before Oversabi Aunty, Toyin Abraham’s films had shown consistent growth but stopped short of the billion naira benchmark:

  • Alakada: Bad and Boujee (2024): ₦500.3 million

  • Malaika (2023): over ₦300 million

  • Ijakumo: The Born Again Stripper (2022): over ₦278 million

  • The Ghost and the Tout Too (2021): over ₦134 million

The leap to ₦1 billion represents a major turning point, marking Oversabi Aunty as her highest-grossing film to date and her first to reach this level.

Why It Matters

Oversabi Aunty is now the fourth-highest-grossing Nollywood film of all time, the first directorial debut to cross ₦1 billion, and the first film from Toyin Abraham’s body of work to achieve the feat. With continued screenings in Nigerian cinemas and select UK locations, the film is still drawing audiences, signalling sustained interest.

Ultimately, this achievement reinforces Toyin Abraham’s status as one of Nollywood’s most bankable filmmakers and highlights the growing commercial potential of locally made theatrical releases—an encouraging sign for the industry as a whole.
